I feel that religion sparks alot of contraversy in todays society. We have seen in the past the global effects religion has on nations such as the terrorist attacks on 9/11 spearheaded by muslim extremest, the crusades for the holylands by the christions, etc… Much of the debate on religion in the United States, is what categorises something that is hurtfull of unfair to to a religion. A good example from class was the Christmas debate. Although it may be in ways hurtful for some religions to see or be greeted with a “merry Christmas” i feel that in America every person(s) has the right to live their lifethey way they choose with whatever religion they want and can preach and express their views whenever they would like in a mature and non disrespectful manner.

I see religion in today’s society as three things, the first one being a lifestyle. I’m guessing 85% of Americans are religious and regardless of which religion is being practiced, those people’s lives most likely revolve around their religion. The second role would be a set of morals and rules. For Christians the Bible has the Ten Commandments and lots of other things are said about what a good Christian would do (I don’t really know a lot about other religions, but I take it they probably have something similar?). These rules are to keep people out of trouble and good humans, which helps keep society intact, but sometimes people take it out of hand. The third role is an answer for question about existence and death.

I think that religion has a major role in society today. Each religion sets its own basic guidelines and beliefs for people who believe in it. There are many different religions throughout the world and there has been a great amount of tension and fighting between all of them, dating all the way back in the 1700′s with the Christian Crusades. There has been a lot of religious controversy recently. 9/11, the war in Iraq, the civil war between the Shiites and the Sunies, etc etc. The main problem is defining the boundary between okay religious beliefs and teachings and governmental laws. Religions telling their followers that it is okay to kill in the name of their God(s) is not acceptable in any circumstance and needs to be put to an end. That is the main cause of all the religious tension and fighting.

  4. Alexis Kozma Says:

I think that people choose to have religion involved in their own lives because they feel it makes them a better person. Religion has helped many become healthier and establish order in their lives. But, overall religion is a double-edged sword because it produces radicals who discriminate against those who do not practice their religion. Some may believe that as long a religion does not affect or hurt anyone else than people should be able to practice it as they choose. However, there will always be the extremists that find it offensive if you do not also believe in their religion. Going back to the change of “in God we trust” in the pledge of allegience, there will always be one group of people to offend no matter what. People are allowed to choose what they believe in, but just the fact that people believe differently causes controversy, and as long as multiple religions are allowed there will always be controversy.

  5. Alan Ericson Says:

Religion plays a significant role in today’s society. A significant percentage of our American society is religious. Religion is all around us in the shape of symbols, buildings of worship, necklaces, and on the news everyday. For example this years upcoming presidential election. The two candidates religious beliefs are constantly under scrutiny. Many voters consider a candidate’s religion when making there choice on who to elect. Religion also plays a prominent role in traditions, such as weddings and funerals. Religious extremist such as Al-queada are always on the news as well as religious figures such as The Pope. Many wars today are fought over religion,

I agree with what Nico said about “Merry Christmas” If some one greated me with a friendly gesture of a holiday I didn’t celebrate I wouldn’t be “offended” at all, I would think it was pretty cool. I agree with what Brian said about killing in the name of god is ridiculous.
